Hiding columns based on screen size

I am very new to this...

I have a row that has two columns
The right column class is "col-md-1 hidden-sm" and the left is "col-md-11 col-sm-12"

On small screen sizes I want the left column to disappear and the right one to have the class "col-sm-12"

Obviously I have the whole concept messed up - when I read about it, it makes a lot of sense, but implementing it creates massive mind block.

Can someone suggest how to accomplish what I need?

Are you still having problems? What does it do at the small resolution that is not working?
