Custom Nav with Responsive Behavior

Hi there!
What's the best-practice way to customize the way my nav looks, but still have the 'pancake' menu kick in when the site is viewed on smaller devices? I imagine I could just use navbar class and go and overwrite all the CSS but this seems backwards to me. Any thought are much appreciated! Thanks for your time,

Go to http://getbootstrap.com/ see their example menu examples. The "pancake" as you call it, is only for smaller screen devices.
